Today we finished up the last 10 minutes of that documentary on the Israeli and the Palestinians. Afterwards, we discussed our readings today concerning the Zionists, the Six-Day War, and the Intifadah. Your homework for tonight is to read up to page 373 and make sure you know what you've read as we will be teaching the teacher for tomorrow's class.

Happy reading!

Where my 'Thursday' at?

Fyi:
I am in the midst of writing the test and I am basing the China portion (the questions are all short answer basically) equally on the presentations and the textbook to accommodate for the two students who didn't hear any of the presentations.
80% of the world's toys are made in China... okay, that was a no brainer but did you know that the fastest train in the world is in Shanghai, travelling at 431km/h?

Homework? Well duuuhhhh... pick up that might fine textbook of ours and let your senses be indulged with pages 326-331. Test is on Friday, so get on it.

Post-Prom Lyfe

Soooo today in class, we went over the pages that were assigned to read over the weekend (until 226), and Mrs. Loconte allowed us to split off into groups for Wednesday's presentation (to teach the class our designated Chapter 10 subject in a more colorful way that your standard, run-of-the-mill PREZZI aka nothing wordy and boring)

We set the test date for this Friday's class which will be based on points taught to the class by grous on Wednesday, so pay attention and know your subject inside and out!

Your homework is just to do your research and work on your presentation for Wednesday and tomorrow's class will be much of the same as well :)

Fun fact: Wearing headphones for just one hour will increase the amount of bacteria in your ear by 700 times.

but they sound like a million colors in your mind”
~ Maria Cristina Mena

Let me (Loconte) also add that:
A) You will have a quiz on this Chapter on Tuesday.
B) Claire, Yohann, Abi, Matthew, Charlotte will be on the Affirmative side of the argument needing to be resolved: Yes Africa should solve its problems itself (to paraphrase)
C) As we are not having a test, I expect your Tuesday's notes to be well thought-out and articulated. Typed or hand written, your reasons provided should demonstrate that you have done the required readings as outlined by Claire and given serious thought to contributing to your team's side. I will collect these after the debate.

words, words, words

I'm assuming I'm the blogger today using deduction and assumption.

but I'm also assuming that you won't be reading this because you are all madly writing your essay, which is due tomorrow btw, i hope you all know that.

If you are grasping at straws and need a resource, the United Nations website is great to click around on.
The BBC website also has some stuff on the Cold War as well.

Things have been a little chaotic in the old Loconte residence (in a good way!!) I've been distracted but not too distracted to notice that today's blogger is noticeably absent.
The test, I can't tell you too much, all I can say is that it will be easy but you will need to study hard to do well.
Let that enigmatic test layout serve you well.
Until tomorrow.

Tricky Tuesdays

What's up, Historians-in-Training?
Our Chapter Six test took up all of class today, and so your homework tonight is to get started reading Chapter Seven from page 211 to 216. There are no review questions assigned, although I do suggest you give them a quick once-over, just to refresh your mind on the main points of your reading section :) If you feel like you haven't done very well on our Chapter test today, you've got Chapter Seven to make up for it - do your best!

Hurray for New Posts

From Claire:

Hey guys!
Just finish the reading from page 145 -147 and be prepared to discuss what we've read in class tomorrow.
I also want to challenge you guys to reflect on the movie we finished watching today. In the same way that Tom cruise and his troops were willing to give up everything and die for the good of their country and world, Jesus came to earth thousands of years before and demonstrated a similar passion. And both of these sacrifices were not in vain. While the 'traitors', led by Tom Cruise were fighting for freedom and liberation, Jesus liberated us when he died on the cross and offered us free access to eternal life when we accept his gift.
See you all tomorrow!

I'm sure I don't even need to say this but there is a chapter test tomorrow so make sure you study real hard tonight! Questions from today's review discussion and jeopardy review game may pop up or be helpful in your revising.
We also were given a bonus assignment. To create a song. Get on that for up to 2% added to your final grade!

Also don't forget that we have our focus questions due and our WWII timeline due.
(hey one of the focus questions is to list major events in WWII so that might be
helpful in creating your timeline.)

Today's class and why a quiz on Monday would be beneficial to the class

In class today, we took notes on World War II, focusing mainly on the Japanese and their influence in the Pacific. Take some time to look over the "In Review" questions on page 119 as we will be starting class tomorrow with those.

Another thing I'd like you all to consider is the possibility of having a short quiz on WWII this coming Monday. I believe it is beneficial for the following reasons:

1. The World War II chapter is around 40 pages long and obtains many important facts - a substantial amount to study. This quiz would be a motivator for us to tackle some of this material in preparation for the chapter test. In other words, it would serve as a stepping stone to the test.

2. Quizzes account for 10% of the term mark. We have only had 1 quiz thus far, which means that 1 quiz would account for that entire 10%, whereas one chapter test would only stand at around 8.3% (25% weight divided by 3 tests) of our overall mark at the end of the term. The fact that we are getting more credit for a short quiz than we are for an entire chapter test that we've all studied hard on, does not make sense to me.

3. We're all going to have to study everything on WWII anyways, why not take this chance to get some extra marks?

There you have it, those are my reasons on how a quiz on Monday would benefit the class. Please comment if you have any questions or concerns.

Matt

And on the Second Day...

Hollah, my party people.

Today we presented our propaganda images to the class and further explored the cruel nature of propaganda back in the day. As well, we also discussed whether propaganda is still evident today, and how propaganda has changed over the years. Do we still experience propaganda like the citizens of Germany, Britain, and other nations had at the time? What's changed? How much influence does propaganda still hold in the lives of many today? Food for thought.

Our assignment tonight is to answer the Interpreting Questions found on the maps of page 106 and 109, respectively.

Study hard, party hard.

Claire's Blog via Loconte

Hey everyone! Is it not exciting getting back into the flow of school routine after our last spring break of our lives?
Anyway, just a reminder for you guys to look into your chosen topic of propaganda and be ready to share briefly on what you have researched. Also, read up to the next set of response questions which is a page range from 105-115 (Don't worry, a lot of pages are pictures and articles that I'm sure you would read on your own, but may or may not be optional...) Also, just a heads up that the essay is due in a couple weeks so I would recommend looking over the different topics that are of interest to you and starting to gather some thoughts in regards to your topic. That is all.

Thanks,

  • Fully answer the Focus Questions

Your homework tonight, should you choose to accept it (which you really should, i mean, GPA and stuff) is the first page of the "Alternative Activity Sheet" comparing and contrasting Mussolini and Hitler.

And because Mrs Loconte said something about a random fact on every post, here's one: 0.3% of all road accidents in Canada involve a moose.

February 4'14

Today we talked about injustices, specifically women's suffrage, that cause individuals and groups in society to stand against the state and have that freedom to demand change if it impedes on a person's 'life, health, liberty or possessions.'

"We are nothere to ask for a reform or gift but a right - not mercy, but for justice." (Nellie McClung)

In addition, we discussed the relationship between the state and society and the obligations we are both called to uphold and honour. Even though as grade 12 students we are underage and politics seem almost irrelevant, I challenge you to consider some aspects of the state that do have a direct impact on us as the younger members of society. How can we demonstrate essential goodness that is characteristic of humans in our 'natural condition?'

Homework status for tonight:
- finish chapter reading from page 12-14
- answer the question posed in regards to figure 1.6 on page 10 in your textbook
- go to everydaysexism.com and find a quote that is shockingly blatant and be ready to present it to the class
