Remember essay will be due somewhere in two weeks.

When Choir Calls

There is no homework today because we wrote a multi-paragraph response based on the previous chapter, as represented by the image today in class.
For choir students, read from page 211 to 214, stopping before Social Problems in the USSR.
This section has already been read by the large class of three that remained after y'all left.

"Oh My, Not This Again" - Derek Upon Seeing The Video

Today we went over the timeline of the Cold War and then read about America's involvement in Latin America. We then watched videos (with annoying music) about the Cold War.

Homework is on page 173. Do the questions 1-6.

Fun Fact: The average person has 5-7 dreams a night.

Cuz History is as Much the Present as it is the Past

Since we are talking about democracy (cold war stuff), let's talk about it:

how do you define corporatocacy?

Do you remember how Communism had state run media? Is Democratic media that far off?

Afghani-oh man....

Today, we discussed 5-8 of In Review on page 151, and continued reading about the war in Afghanistan. For homework, read Detente, and stop at The Cold War in the 1980s.

The Cold War never bothered me anyway

(except for the part where, you know, the planet faced nuclear annihilation, but that's neither here nor there)

Today we researched our Cold War snapshots and Hannah and Jody presented on the Vietnam War.  The rest of the presentations will continue tomorrow?

Your homework, whether or not you choose to accept it:
Read pages 160-165 in the Twentieth Century Viewpoints textbook, and start working on your essays, due by the end of the Cold War unit.

New History 12 Theme Song!

Hey guys,

Today we watched some videos (with excellent music that Derek did not like at all) that went as far back into our distant past as World War I up to The Battle of Midway in World War II, We also listened to the Iron Curtain speech by Winston Churchill earlier on in class, and were given assignments about the Cold War.

Homework:

Bring your devices to browse videos tomorrow
Start research on the Cold War themes that you've chosen with your partners, half of the class goes tomorrow, and the other half will continue on Thursday(? I'm not sure)
Also, work on your essays and bring both textbooks! we'll be using them both tomorro

That's all! (I think)

Fun Fact: If you expose a glass of water to space, it will boil instead of freeze. The water vapor would almost immediately crystallize into ice.

World War II: The Musical

A brief summary of today:

And the Tony goes to...

Today we presented our fantastic song projects!  Good job, everyone!  We also discussed post-war Japan and began talking about the UN.

This weekend's homework:
Do questions 1-8 on page 187 in the Twentieth Century Viewpoints textbook.  Also presumably read from the beginning of the chapter to said page.  I mean, you could try to do the questions without reading the textbook, but unless you're a United Nations expert and can answer any question about them blindfolded while hanging upside by your toes in a freezing dungeon, it's probably advisable to read the textbook.

Fun Fact: This is an honest, freely admitted Rick Roll.  Let us all enjoy the dulcet tones and smooth moves of Rick Astley (and Hitler!) together!

Quiz not a Test

Today we read and discussed about why Japan attacked America and invaded Manchuria, we also listened to two oral reports on the Kamikaze and Emperor Hirohito. After that we were quite shocked to be handed a quiz that included drawing scenes of the war, and we were assigned reading for the next day.

Homework: read pages 235-238 in global forces, do not read wars of national liberation.
Song projects! 😱

Fun fact not really that much of a fact I guess:
A senryu (type of Japanese poem) was written about the 3 major daimyo (warlords/leaders) who contributed to the unification of Japan in the Sengoku period. Each line is meant to represent their personality and the way they would deal with problems.

If the cuckoo does not sing, kill it
If the cuckoo does not sing, coax it
If the cuckoo does not sing, wait for it

Nobunaga Oda, the subject of the first line is known for ruthlessness, Toyotomi Hideyoshi is known for his resourcefulness, and the third subject Tokugawa Ieyasu is known for his perseverance.

Bye bye

2 Tests, 1 Week

Hello my friends,

Today we finished the Pacific War section!
Crazy how we spend two week on WW2 in Europe and 3 days on this one.... (wise sayings by Audrey Li)
We discussed the review questions, filled out a chart and also practice our song projects and studied for our TEST TOMORROW!!!
Timeline of the Pacific War. (Know your stuff from this chapter, dates and elaborate on the events!)
(Maybe know the vocab too?)

Our song projects are due on Friday so be prepared with the writeups and practice lots.

PS: Maddy (me) and Victoria will be presenting our case studies tomorrow (Kamikaze and Emperor Hirohito)

A Haiku for Mrs. Loconte and History class:

Two tests in one week,
Mrs. Loconte away.
Hopefully we pass.

Jody's Favorite Country

Review for You in a Slide or Two

Eurocentrism in the words of Derek, "Dumb white people."

Hello everyone!
In class we went over the beginning of Chapter 8, the Pacific War. We learned about the war in Asia, specifically between Japan and America and we called out EUROCENTRISM. Learn the vocab word hegemony, guys.
So today your homework is:
Critical Analysis #4 and 5 from the end of the section (page 151)
Song projects due Friday
Test Thursday
Maddy is doing a presentation on Emperor Hirohito while I am presenting the Kamikaze (Sorry Jody).
It's fair to say we have a fair amount of this homework, so have fun finishing that!

Fun fact! In 1999 researchers led by Dr. Yang Dan anesthetized a cat with sodium pentothal, chemically paralyzed it with Norcuron, and secured it tightly in a surgical frame. They then glued metal posts to the whites of its eyes and forced it to look at a screen that showed scene after scene of swaying trees and turtleneck-wearing men.

Did You Guys Know Any Dates?

Is it Saturday Already?

In class we sang "beautifully", as we reimagined our favourite songs with new and improved lyrics.
We have our test on World War II (Global Forces Textbook - Chapter 7) on Monday. It is comprised of:
1. Vocab - 5 questions
2. Multiple Choice - 10 questions
3. Short Answer - 3 questions
The whole thing will be out of 45 marks, and Mrs. Loconte recommended that we familiarize ourselves with a timeline of events for this chapter.
